<description>@pehea 'oe? - Thanks! I thought that we might see a slight difference so it was a pleasant shock to find that such simple things would add up like that. I have "eco guilt" for having been such an energy hog for all this time. When you move over here, you'll have your PV going and won't have to deal with HELCO at all!

@Andrew - Exactly what you said! We used to have our cell phones, the kids' gaming devices, TV, computers, evil microwave, EVERYTHING plugged in all the time. It really made a huge difference just to unplug them. I shared this with all my friends. Wish more people knew . . .

<description>Glad to see that bit about unplugging things not in use. Standby power is a real issue with some appliances. some of the worst are those "wall warts" or power transformers that come with so many small appliances like cell phones, palmtop computer and handheld video games. The older style of these, which were something an electrical engineer calls a "linear supply" could waste 1-3 watts with nothing plugged into it.

If something wastes 2 watts then it will cost 2W x 8760hrs/year = 17.5kWh
This comes to 17.5kWh x $0.52/kWh= $9.10 per year to keep plugged in

The old style linears are supplied with fewer devices these days but they are still fairly common in a lot of homes. The newer adapters are switchers and waste as little a 1/2W to keep powered. Some devices like televisions and computers are even worse for standby power! Shut it off or unplug it.
